It was with great sadness that I heard last night of the untimely death of Lord Garden, who died on August 9th at the age of 63. Tim Garden was diagnosed with incurable cancer a few weeks before his death.
Only a few months ago Tim came to speak to Chipping Barnet Liberal Democrats about foreign and defence policy. We had a great evening and he answered questions with great authority and knowledge over a very wide range of issues. He will be greatly missed. My condolences to Sue and the family.

He was a thoroughly nice and very knowledgeable man who visited Witney constituency during the 2005 campaign and was extremely gracious when our candidate had to make her apologies to square up to David Cameron.
In principle, my obituary of him will appear in the Guardian tomorrow (Tuesday). He was great fun, as well as being a brilliant pundit on defence and foreign affairs matters. It's a tragic loss.
